The formalist view of this essay is pretty straight forward. The author is writing about the things that are happening to her as she is forced away from her vices--her writing. The New Historicist may say that was common for that time period. I found it very interesting that she went on to become a feminist. She described the walls in a way of transferrance. Interestingly enough, she became fond of the wallpaper (her crazy self) by the end of the essay. She was probably always a feminist, and that is why they thought she was "ill".
