Setting: The second week of December, after driving around in the mall parking lot for essentially what seems like hours, but has really only been 15 minutes and finally finding a parking space in the back of the parking lot at the very last row. This is their first Christmas together, so they laugh and get out of the car, and start walking towards the mall entrance. The wind is blowing and there is a light chill in the air.
Characters: Mathew and MacKenzie
Matt: “Where do you want to start? “
Mac: “Let’s hit Macy’s and get the rest of the decorations for our tree, then whatever you want to do is fine with me.”
Matt: “Excellent, I was thinking that after Macy’s, we could just take our time and look around a bit, and then maybe hit Cold Stone for some ice cream or a smoothie. Maybe even see if there are any new movies out that we want to check out.”
Mathews scarf is starting to slide off of his shoulder and Mac reaches over and ever so gently places the scarf back around Matts neck.
Mac: “Wow, it is much chillier than I thought it would be today.”
Mathew reaches over and takes Macs hand to warm it up. They both look at each other and smile as their hearts begin to swell. They are very giddy and jubilant.
Matt: “I can’t believe that you actually talked me into coming to the mall this time of year—all of the people, it makes me crazy.”
Mac: “You have to think of it as an adventure. We can keep track and see who gets bumped into the most. You know, do something fun. Stop being a scrooge, Christmas is fun and magical.”
Matt: “Well, I will try, but don’t ask me to take a picture with Santa, that is where I draw the line.”
Mac: “Whew-hew, halfway to the entrance, I can’t wait to see the new Martha Stewart line at Macy’s.”
Matt: “She sure has moved up in the business since being incarcerated…from Kmart to Macy’s.”
Mac: “This wind is something, I can’t wait to see how it plays havoc on that perfect hair of yours.” He is grinning from ear to ear at this point.
As they get closer to the mall, there seems to be some kind of tension growing with each step. Neither one of them want to let go of the others hand. Then it happens; the door opens and four or five guys wearing local college football jerseys exit. They are pushing each other and laughing together. Then one suddenly looks ahead and his eyes meet Matt’s. Matt quickly releases Mac’s hand as the fear begins to take over his body. He tells himself to just keep walking and not to worry. Mac senses the fear too. They quickly pass the guys and get into the mall.
Matt: “You aren’t kidding about that wind, it is pretty chilly out there.”
Mac: “Thank god we are inside. Safe and warm.”
Mac reaches out his hand and even though Matt is feeling a bit reluctant, he gives him his hand.
Mac: “Now let’s go and see what Martha has done this season.”

Dr. H, let me know what you think.

Hi, Kris. This play leads readers in from the cold to a warm and accepting place. You writer, you! I love your characters and their genuiness and the dynamic interior quality underlying an otherwise regular day. Bravo!
